Gama Pehalwan Career
At the age of 17 in 1895, Gama Pehalwan, a young wrestler, challenged the then-Indian Wrestling Champion, Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala. The match ended in a draw, marking a significant moment in Gama’s career. By 1910, Gama had defeated all prominent Indian wrestlers except Raheem, and he decided to shift his focus to competing with wrestlers from around the world.
Gama traveled to England with his younger brother but faced initial difficulties due to his height when trying to enter competitions. To prove his skills, he issued a challenge to anyone in any weight class, claiming he could throw them in 30 minutes. Many wrestlers and their promoter R. B. Benjamin saw this as a bluff. Gama specifically challenged heavyweight wrestlers like Stanislaus Zbyszko and Frank Gotch to entice them to accept his challenge. Gama’s first opponent in London was Benjamin Roller, whom he defeated in 1 minute 40 seconds and 9 minutes 10 seconds. On the second day, he defeated 12 more wrestlers, eventually earning entry into the official tournament.
