At the age of 17 in 1895, Gama Pehalwan, a young wrestler, challenged the then-Indian Wrestling Champion, Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala. The match ended in a draw, marking a significant moment in Gama’s career. By 1910, Gama had defeated all prominent Indian wrestlers except Raheem, and he decided to shift his focus to competing with wrestlers from around the world.

Gama’s first opponent in London was Benjamin Roller, whom he defeated in 1 minute 40 seconds and 9 minutes 10 seconds. On the second day, he defeated 12 more wrestlers, eventually earning entry into the official tournament.
