Unnikrishnan began his military journey by joining the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune, Maharashtra, in 1995. He was part of the Oscar Squadron (No. 4 Battalion) and graduated from the 94th Course of NDA, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree. Subsequently, Unnikrishnan enrolled in the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun as part of the 104th regular course. On June 12, 1999, he completed his training at IMA and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment (Infantry) in the Indian Army. During Operation Vijay in July 1999, he displayed courage and determination in the face of heavy artillery and small arms fire from Pakistani troops.
On December 31, 1999, Unnikrishnan led a team of six soldiers and established a post just 200 meters away from the enemy’s position, despite being under direct observation and fire. He demonstrated exceptional leadership and bravery. Throughout his career, Sandeep Unnikrishnan received promotions, becoming a Captain on June 12, 2003, and a Major on June 13, 2005. He excelled in the ‘Ghatak course’ at the Infantry Wing Commando School in Belgaum, achieving top scores and earning an “Instructor grading” and Commendation. He also received training at the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg. After serving in various locations, including Siachen, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat (during the 2002 Gujarat Riots), Hyderabad, and Rajasthan, Unnikrishnan was selected to join the National Security Guards (NSG). In January 2007, he became the training officer of the 51 Special Action Group (51 SAG) of NSG and participated in several operations conducted by the NSG.

On the night of November 26, 2008, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan led a team of commandos to rescue hostages from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai during a terrorist attack. He successfully evacuated hostages and saved a wounded commando. When he encountered terrorists trying to escape, he bravely pursued them alone and cornered them in the hotel’s Ballroom. Tragically, he sacrificed his life during the encounter, uttering the words, “Don’t come up, I will handle them.” NSG commandos later eliminated all four terrorists in the Ballroom and Wasabi restaurant of the hotel.
