Padmini Kolhapure, born on November 1, 1965, comes from a Marathi and Konkani family. She is the second of three daughters born to Pandharinath Kolhapure, a professional musician, and Nirupama Kolhapure. Her elder sister is Shivangi Kolhapure, who is married to actor Shakti Kapoor and is the mother of actress Shraddha Kapoor and actor Siddhanth Kapoor. Her younger sister, Tejaswini Kolhapure, is also an actress.
The family adopted the surname “Kolhapure” as a nod to their origin in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Padmini’s mother, Nirupama Kolhapure, comes from a Konkani Brahmin Marathi family in Mangalore, Karnataka. Padmini’s father, Pandharinath Kolhapure, was a talented vocalist and Veena player. He was the son of Pandit Krishnarao Kolhapure, an expert in Natya Sangeet and associated with the Balvant Natak Academy along with Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Pandharinath’s mother was the half-sister of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and the sister of Balwantrao Abhisheki, who was the father of vocalist Jitendra Abhisheki. This makes Padmini the niece of renowned singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. Padmini’s mother used to work for Air India as ground staff.
During her work on the movie Aisa Pyaar Kahan (1986), Padmini Kolhapure met Pradeep Sharma, also known as Tutu Sharma, who was the film’s producer. They decided to marry after a short courtship in 1986. The couple has a son named Priyaank Sharma, born in February 1990. Priyaank has worked as an assistant to filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi on the film Phata Poster Nikla Hero and has acted in the movie Sab Kushal Mangal (2020). He tied the knot with Shaza Morani, the daughter of producer Karim Morani and sister of Zoa Morani, on February 4, 2021.

As a child, Padmini Kolhapure sang in chorus for songs in movies like Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Kitaab, and Dushman Dost along with her sister Shivangi. She later sang for her own films, such as Vidhaata, Daana Pani, Professor Ki Padosan, Hum Intezaar Karenge, and Sadak Chhap (with Kishore Kumar). She even released an album with Bappi Lahiri called Music Lovers and performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London with him in 1986. Padmini got her start in acting thanks to a suggestion from Asha Bhosle to Dev Anand, leading to roles in films like Ishk Ishk Ishk (1975) and Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1977), where she played a child.
